YOUR DISASTER PLAYBOOK
Living away from home changes more than your address. Commutes may be longer, utilities may overlap, belongings may need to be moved or stored, and pets may require temporary boarding.
The next moves in our Disaster Playbook will help you identify these changes, calculate the added costs, and maintain the records needed for your insurance claim.
LIVING EXPENSES
Review the Additional Living Expense or Loss of Use coverage in your policy. Confirm your available limits, eligible expenses, deadlines, and the process for requesting advances or reimbursements.
Insurance generally focuses on the increase above what you would normally spend. Gather earlier bills, bank statements, and household records to establish your normal expenses for utilities, food, transportation, and home services.
Keep receipts, invoices, statements, mileage records, and proof of payment organized by expense and date. Submit expenses regularly, track what has been reimbursed, and follow up on anything still under review.
Your carrier will tell you to save receipts, but it will not explain the full range of expenses your policy can cover. You will not receive ideas for increased travel, utilities, internet, laundry, storage, moving, pet boarding, or other costs created by your displacement.
They also will not walk you through replacing belongings and recovering the depreciation withheld from your first payment.
What they do not explain can leave significant money UNCLAIMED.
